Megan Griffith interview English version

In the programmguide of the Celeritas-Donar vs Binnenland game a short briefing about Megan Griffith was published. She has played, yesterday’s game included, 4 games so far. This interview was not held to soon.

Megan graduated in economics at Columbia university. An Ivy-league school. In the USA there are some “elite”-schools. An Ivy-league school is more known because of the education rather than sports. Schools like Duke, North Carolina Tar Heels and University of Connecticut (UConn) are more famous because of their basketballprogramm. Although you have to maintain an educational level to be allowed to play. You visit a school like Duke because to play in a team which is a contender for the NCAA championship, not because you want to get an education. This might be a little bit silly, but some (mostly Dutch) readers of this article don’t know too much about collegebasketball in the USA. Hopefully now they will understand a litle bit the difference between an Ivy-league school and a school which isn’t an Ivy-league school.

Columbia is playing against schools like Harvard, Princeton and Yale. You might have seen or heard these names before. Being a law student I would like to go to Harvard law-school. Especially when a lady like Reese Witherspoon is waiting there for me.

Once graduated Megan turned out pro-baller. First in Finland at Forssan. Last season she started in Sweden, playing for the Sundsvall Saints. She ended the season playing for Espoo, Finland. This season she is playing for us! Celeritas-Donar from Groningen.

Before she came to the Netherlands Megan knew this country is small, flat and has a lot of canals. A friend of her told her the level of the Dutch league is quite well. The Dutch league doesn’t have a lot of foreign players according to an American player who played in the Dutch league a couple of years ago.

The people in Groningen are described by Megan as warm and welcome. It makes it easier for her to adjust. Megan is, that’s what I think, a woman who isn’t affraid for some adventure. Meeting new people and get to know a different culture, no problem for Megan! In her third year in Europe, the Netherlands are the third country she is staying at. Besides basketball Megan would like to do some other activities like coaching some kids or doing a language course. In my opinion that’s the way to show you want to taste something about the Dutch culture. Hopefully the people can offer her something good! Maybe it might convince her to stay at the end of this season. For the image of the club it would be a good thing too. A club who doesn’t only pay money, but is also willing to let a person develop oneselves, that’s what our club should be.

If we are going to talk about basketball, it would be helpful if Megan can teach the kids. She has skills and experience. Kids can learn from her. At Friday night the girlsteams of under 14, under 16 and under 20 are having practise. This might be a good opportunity. Megan is a professional player, used to practise 4 or 5 times a week. Practises attended always by atleast 10 players. Here in Holland that’s dfferent. Because most players are having a job or are students, they are missing practise once in a while.

At this moment Megan is having 3 teampractises with our team. She is going for a fitness workout sometimes, is joining the practise of Groene Uilen on Tuesday night and sometimes she is also having practise with the girls under 20 team. Maybe, now Celeritas-Donar and Groene Uilen are working together, there is the ability for Megan studying business or something. Groene Uilen is a students-only basketballclub. Doing my dishes isn’t something interesting for Megan I think. So I won’t offer her to do that.

Megan hopes to help the team to reach what’s in for them. Whatever this might be. Statistical numbers are not interesting for her. I like that. Players who want to reach 20 points and 10 rebounds, might harm the teamprocess. A player who is a teamplayer is more likely to be succesfull. Her teammates are willing to give their best shot, and that is helping her game as well.

For now I think the most usefull answers are mentioned. Maybe later on the other questions and answers will be reported.

Megan, thanks a lot for doing this interview! Good luck and have a lot of fun in this team!
